We are having a coffee with Mayor Carlisle next Wednesday, the 27^th 8am at Haleiwa Joe's.  It is a talk story format, so you will be able to ask him any questions you may have about issues affecting the North Shore, your business, etc. Cost for members is $3.

 

We hope that you plan on attending as it is a great opportunity to let him know your concerns. We should also express our appreciation for Mayor Carlisle's support in obtaining $2.835 million for the planning and design of the walkways as well as funding for an assessment of the Haleiwa Beach Park in order to restore this treasure.

4th Annual Business Expo Keeps It Local with “Living Farm to Table” Dinner

Registration is open for the North Shore Chamber of Commerce’s 4th Annual Business Expo and “Living Farm to Table” Dinner, Thursday, May 17 at Turtle Bay Resort.  The Business Expo is an educational and networking opportunity for the North Shore business community.  This year’s Expo is featuring seminars on agriculture business and marketing with a focus on retail and food service on the North Shore. The highlight of the event is a “Farm to Table” dinner with tasting stations featuring local chefs and ingredients.   

The featured chefs will be: John Armstrong of 21 Degrees North; Fred DeAngelo of Ola; Mark Fitzek of Haleiwa Joe’s; Hector Morales of Turtle Bay Resort; Mike Neubert of Lei Lei’s; and Luis Silva of LuiBuenos.  The dinner keynote speakers will be Drs. James and Paul Brewbaker.  The senior Brewbaker is a professor emeritus in horticulture at UH College of Tropical Ag and Human Resources and developed the Hawaiian Supersweet, also known as Kahuku Sweet Corn.  His son, Dr. Paul Brewbaker, is a well-known economist and the Chair of the Council on Revenues for the state of Hawaii.       

The Expo begins at 1:00 pm with an afternoon program of seminars, panel discussions, and a keynote speaker during dinner. A cocktail reception will follow the expo and precede the “Farm to Table” dinner.  Seminars will include “History of Agriculture & Food on the North Shore” and a panel discussion on agriculture with a theme of “Working Together Works.”  The panel will be comprised of a cross section of North Shore agriculture businesses with a focus on key issues facing Ag on the North Shore:  Land, Water, Financing and Distribution.

Two seminars will focus on marketing: “Effective Online Marketing Strategies for Small Businesses in 2012,” by Nate Burgoyne of Integrity Online Marketing and “What the Chamber’s Recent Visitor Study Means to You” by Jodie Young Wilmott of Ocean Promotion and BYU Hawaii’s marketing class.

Annual Meeting/Elections Wed. April 25th & Business Expo May 17th

Please plan on attending the Chamber's annual meeting next Wednesday at Haleiwa Joes, 8am for the annual meeting and election of new Board members. Please RSVP by next Monday.

Secondly, please register for the Business Expo to be held at Turtle Bay Resort Thursday, May 17th from 1pm to 8:30pm. If you pay by Friday the 27th, you will get the Early Bird Registration!!

This year we've changed things up a bit with a theme of "Living Farm to Table." The event will be in the afternoon with a "Farm to Table" dinner.  You can sign up to just come to the afternoon sessions for $20 which includes the cocktail hour, or the expo, cocktail hour and dinner for only $70!  Get an exhibitor's table for only $150 which includes dinner for two, or round up your friends and get a corporate table for $500.  There will be a buffet and tasting stations featuring specialty dishes made by your favorite local chefs.

Thanks to Turtle Bay Resort and our farmers, the prices for the dinner and to attend are very affordable.  We will have some great break-out sessions including a panel discussion with our farmers and we are working on a great keynote speaker to address the future of agriculture.

The purpose of the event is to provide networking opportunities for all, but especially our farmers, restaurants, and distributors to meet and start doing business with each other.  Our hope is that there will be relationships built that will increase the use of locally grown, fresh products from the North Shore, which will increase agricultural production, which will ensure ag is viable on the North Shore into the future.

Fifth Annual Taste of Waialua

On Saturday, April 7, 2012 from 8:30 am - 3 pm, Island X Hawaii, with support from the North Shore Chamber of Commerce, will host a celebration of North Shore community and cottage industry at the Waialua Sugar Mill. Come join us on Saturday, April 7th for a gathering of local art, food, music, community groups and to celebrate the rebirth of the Old Historic Waialua Sugar Mill town at the 5th Annual Taste of Waialua Festival.

                                                  

Event Schedule and Highlights

 

8:30 a.m.     Waialua Farmers Co-op Market opens featuring Waialua grown fruits and veggies. 

 

9:30 a.m.     At Island X Hawaii, the Hawaii Coffee Association and Dr. Shawn Steiman of Consulting will present a history of coffee in Hawaii and the emergence of Waialua Coffee. Throughout the day, free behind the scenes Waialua Coffee & Cacao Mill Tours will be offered by Derek Lanter from Dole.

 

10:30 am and 1:00 p.m.     Historical and Agricultural Tours hosted by the North Shore Chamber of Commerce. We will provide two narrated bus tours that will visit historic sites around Waialua, highlight the agricultural history of the area and briefly visit farms such as a taro farm and Dole's cacao farm. Tours are free, depart at 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. but space is very limited. Call 779-7439 to pre-register.

12: 00 p.m.    Also at Island X Store, Madre Chocolate's David Elliot will lead a chocolate making demonstration where attendees can learn how this delectable food is made from bean to bar.

First Wind gets financing for North Shore Oahu wind farm

First Wind    has closed on $236 million in financing for what will be the largest wind power project in Hawaii, the 69-megawatt Kawailoa Wind farm on Oahu’s North Shore.

A subsidiary of Boston-based First Wind closed on a loan of $220 million and $16 million in letters of credit for the project from lead lender Union Bank, along with Bayern AB, Rabobank    and Siemens Financial Services    , the company said in a statement. CIBC and CoBank also participated in the financing, the company said.

D.R. Horton to lease 18 acres at Hoopili to Oahu's Ho Farms

D.R. Horton    has signed a letter of intent with Ho Farms on Oahu's North Shore to lease 18 acres on the site of a 11,750-home residential subdivision the developer plans to build on 1,554 acres in Ewa.

The Honolulu Star Advertiser reports D.R. Horton's local Schuler Division said the letter of intent with Ho Farms, which grows specialty tomatoes and other vegetables on 40 acres in Kahuku, underscores the developer's plan to integrate 159 acres of commercial farms within the planned Hoopili community.

The North Shore Chamber of Commerce's Historic Preservation Committee is pleased to present two North Shore residents in the third presentation in its Historical Lecture Series on Saturday, February 4, 2012 at 7 p.m. at the Historic Haleiwa Gym. Author Vera Stone Williams will present an illustrated talk on her groundbreaking book, "WASPs, the Women Airforce Service Pilots of World War II," recently republished by the Pacific Historic Parks in 2011. Aviator and historian Captain Rick Rogers will also present an illustrated talk on the fascinating history of aviation on the North Shore This event is made possible through the generous sponsorship of Stearman Biplane Rides.

The WASPs was a pioneering organization of highly skilled civilian female pilots employed to fly military aircraft in essential noncombat missions under the direction of the United States Army Air Force during World War II. "WASPs, the Women Airforce Service Pilots of World War II' is a lively, reminiscent, and beautifully illustrated tribute to these irrepressible "fly girls" of the forties.  Long on stories and vivid remembrances, this book captures the spirit of their great adventure and shows how the experience changed these women's lives and broadened the horizons for all women."

Haleiwa Christmas, Parade and Event Notice

The North Shore Chamber of Commerce's annual "Christmas in Historic Haleiwa" Haleiwa Town Christmas Parade is tomorrow, December 9th .  Photos with Santa will be at the North Shore Marketplace from 4:00 to 5:30 PM before the parade and after the parade until 8:30 PM.  The parade will include up to 50 units.

The purpose of this event is to bring shoppers to your business!  We want to encourage locals to shop here while inviting the rest of the island to enjoy doing their Christmas shopping in Haleiwa also.  Support our "Buy Local" campaign by buying your Christmas gifts from fellow North Shore merchants and save on your carbon footprint too!  If we all support one another, we help create jobs for our neighbors and residents on the North Shore .

HOW MERCHANTS CAN PARTICIPATE:
·         Dress your store up in lights.  I am glad to see that most everyone has their lights up already!! The lighting is getting better and better every year.  The town really looks so festive every year!
·         Promote Photos with Santa  4:00 to 5:30 PM the night of the parade at the North Shore Marketplace and after the parade until 8:30pm.  
·         Have extended holiday store hours.  We would like to see the stores stay open until 9 PM the last two weeks before Christmas from December 9th to the 24th.  If we want to encourage North Shore residents to shop at our stores, we need to stay open at least an hour or two after they get back from work from Honolulu , which is often not until 6 PM when our stores are closing.
·         Have a sidewalk sale, in-store special, and/or demonstrations/events both nights.  This was chosen by the merchants as the best way to advertise the town.
·         Advise customers to arrive and park in Haleiwa before the parade by 5:00 pm and that it will be over around 7:30 pm to avoid not being able to get to or from your place of business due to the street closure for the parade.

Come Enjoy the Annual Christmas Parade and Lights In Historic Hale'iwa Town

HALEIWA, OAHU , HAWAII - December 3, 2011 - Come enjoy the Christmas parade and lights of Historic Hale'iwa Town on the North Shore Friday, December 9, 2011.

 

This year's theme is "Waialua Complex Schools Succeed!"  The Grand Marshall will be Scott Moore, principal of Waialua Elementary School, representing the only school complex in the state whose schools all met their Annual Yearly Progress.  Waialua Elementary is also only one of three schools in Hawaii and one of 300 through out the U.S. recognized as a Blue Ribbon school under No Child Left Behind.  Congratulations to all of our schools!

 

Over 40 units are planned for the parade, including bands, beauty queens, horse units, hula dancers, scouts, soccer teams, a fire engine, floats, and many other units unique to the North Shore.

 

The parade starts at 6:00 PM at the Weed Circle roundabout, and will travel through Haleiwa Town , ending at Hale'iwa Beach Park at approximately 7:00 PM.  The road will be closed for approximately one hour.

 

Other festivities include:

·      Children of all ages can visit with Santa Claus before and after the parade, and may also have their picture taken with Santa for a donation of $5.00. Santa will be at the North Shore Marketplace under the monkey pod tree from 4:00 - 5:30 PM, and immediately following the parade from 7:30 to 8:30 PM.

 

·      Shops will host sidewalk sales, in-store specials, demonstrations, and other great events before and after the parade.

 

The Chamber encourages everyone to come and shop in the unique boutiques and stores in Hale'iwa before and after the parade, and to enjoy local North Shore flavors in one of Hale'iwa's many great restaurants. The annual parade is a great way to bring friends to this plantation-era community, supporting local businesses and in turn helping to create sustainable economic development on the North Shore .

 

Arrival before 5:00 PM is recommended in order to find parking in the town's shopping centers, or at the Historic Haleiwa Gym. A flashlight and lawn chairs or blankets are also recommended. The festivities will close the main street for just over an hour, re-opening around 7:15 PM. City buses will be re-routed during this time; please plan accordingly.

Turtle Bay Resort’s new brand ties into N. Shore surf culture

Turtle Bay Resort is launching a new brand and corporate identity — complete with a logo that replaces its honu, or turtle, design with a blue wave.

It is aimed at promoting itself more heavily as an iconic property on Oahu’s famed North Shore and part of the surf culture.

Oahu wind farm project faces federal grant deadline

Hawaii regulators have two weeks to approve a contract for a wind farm on the North Shore of Oahu in order for developer First Wind to take advantage of a federal grant that would cover 30 percent of the project's costs.

Happy Thanksgiving!

We want to wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving!!  We have much to be grateful for in Haleiwa and the North Shore.  We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world, in a wonderful community where people care for one another, and in a place that is thriving economically while much of the rest of the country and world are struggling. 

Here at the Chamber we are grateful and give thanks for you our members and supporters. Mahalo nui. Tomorrow please remember our troops overseas that are not able to be with their families while they are protecting us here, safe in our homes.

Santa's Coming To Town

It's already that time of year!!  Santa will be visiting the Haleiwa Town Center this Saturday from 5:00 to 8:00pm in front of Kai Ku Hale and Scoop of Paradise.  Photos will be developed by Long's Drugs and more photos or Christmas cards can be ordered from them. 

Santa will also be available for photos at the North Shore Marketplace before and after the annual Haleiwa Town Christmas Parade.

Hawaiian Surfing, Traditions from the Past

The North Shore Chamber of Commerce’s Historic Preservation Committee is pleased to present the second illustrated lecture in its Historical Lecture Series by author and historian John Clark on his pioneering work, “Hawaiian Surfing, Traditions from the Past.” This event is made possible through the generous sponsorship of Van’s Triple Crown of Surfing.

This groundbreaking book is a history of the traditional sport narrated primarily by native Hawaiians who wrote for the Hawaiian language newspapers of the 1800s. Clark conducted extensive research into the emerging online archive of Hawaiian language and history called Ho`olaupa`i for references about traditional Hawaiian surfing. He collaborated with Keao NeSmith, one of Hawaii’s most respected Hawaiian language educators, to carefully translate these references providing an exceptional compendium of cultural knowledge about the sport in ancient Hawaii.  The book will be available for purchase at the event.

Lack of Public Involvement Slows Laniakea Traffic Project

Our membership meeting is this Thursday the 25th at Haleiwa Joe's, 8AM.  The guest speaker will be Kamehameha Schools who will be presenting their plans for the Haleiwa Commercial Redevelopment where Aoki's and Matsumoto's are.  This is an opportunity for you to find out more about their plan and ask any questions you may have.  Please see attached draft agenda.  

Also, if you have not already done so, please mark your calendars for the Christmas Party on December 1st, 6pm at Turtle Bay .  (The parade is the following Friday the 9th at 6pm.)  The Christmas Party is the Chamber's main fundraiser for the year and we are seeking Sponsors for $1000 that includes a table for 8 and also companies that want to get a Corporate Table for $500.  In addition, we will be seeking donations for the silent auction. As always, we really appreciate your on-going support!

Turtle Bay expansion plans cut by 60 percent

The owners of the Turtle Bay Resort on Oahu’s North Shore plan to build only 25 percent of the 2,500 new hotel rooms originally outlined in a 1985 master plan, according to a supplemental environmental impact statement preparation notice filed with the state.
