Emergency sirens targeted by vandals

HALEIWA-  Imagine not being able to hear an emergency siren because of vandalism or theft?  That's a real and frightening possibility for residents on Oahu's North Shore after a siren at Haleiwa Beach Park was targeted three times since April.

The city’s deputy director of Emergency Management says the vandals broke into steel boxes that contain the siren’s wet cell batteries.  Peter Hirai says without the batteries the sirens may not function.

We're asking for the public to assist us in monitoring these sirens and if they see any kind of suspicious activity call 911 immediately,” said Hirai.  “These sirens are locked and they are secure but folks are getting into them.”

The meeting with our elected officials has been changed to Thursday, July 14th 6:30pm at Waimea Valley's Pikaka Pavilion. So make sure you change the meeting on your calendar from this coming week to July 14th.  This evening meeting is to accommodate those members who are unable to attend morning meetings. 

This is a great opportunity to hear from our newly elected officials about the status of the City and State's affairs, any legislation or issues impacting the North Shore and to ask any questions you may have.

Haleiwa redevelopment has businesses fretting over future

Some owners are concerned that new buildings will lack space fit for them

Looking for more sources of revenue through additional lease space, landowner Kamehameha Schools hopes to "revitalize" a block of historic Haleiwa Town that is home to the popular Matsumoto and Aoki shave ice stores — a change prompting some businesses there to rethink their future.

"We're not sure we're going to be part of the change. We're not sure what we want to do," said Cathy Aoki, one of the owners of Aoki's Shave Ice.

A draft environmental assessment for the Kamehameha Schools Haleiwa Commercial Redevelopment Project is available for review at the state Office of Environmental Quality Control website (1.usa.gov/ l3bltw) in its current notices.

North Shore Map vs Map Guys Map

Aloha Members,

Just a note to let you know that the Chamber's map, the North Shore Map, will be republished in August because our pick-up rate has been higher than expected and we will be contacting you soon.

Currently, the Map Guys are selling their map, but a word of caution:  their circulation is one-half that of our map.  They are selling ads for roughly the same amount as our ads, but for one year and their flyer says, "50,000 to 75000 annually."  We are distributing 70,000 maps twice a year or 140,000 per year.  Also, they do not distribute from key places like the airport.

So, if you must choose between one or the other of the maps, please compare carefully and call us if you have a question.  I'm biased, but I think the Chamber has a better product.

Taste of Waialua This Saturday

Experience the 2011 - Fourth Annual Taste of Waialua
On Saturday, April 23, 2011 from 8:30 am - 5 pm, Island X Hawaii / Old Sugar Mill Brand Coffee & Chocolate will host a celebration of North Shore grown coffee, cacao, produce, food, art, film, music, and surf industry manufacturing at an open house exhibition in the Old Sugar Mill, Waialua.
The North Shore town of Waialua was once a bustling sugar mill town producing what locals said was the "World's Best Sugar" but in 1996 the Waialua Sugar Mill stopped production and closed its gates after over a 100 years of operation. In recent years, however, there has been a quiet resurgence of shops, businesses, and local product manufacturing that has helped transform the Old Waialua Sugar Mill into one of Oahu's newest visitor destinations. The mill is also the processing site of Waialua Coffee and Cacao / Dole. Free mini tours of the coffee and chocolate mill as well as free Waialua Coffee samples are offered daily at Island X Hawaii. Come join us on Saturday, April 23rd, for a gathering of local art, food, music, and community groups and to celebrate the rebirth of the Old Historic Waialua Sugar Mill town.

8:30 am     Waialua Farmers Co-op Market opens featuring Waialua grown fruits and veggies. The Co-op is made up of former sugar workers, growing their produce on what was previously sugar land. To see a complete listing of Co op members, please go to www.tasteofwaialua.com.
 
9:30 am     At Island X Hawaii, the Hawaii Coffee Association and Dr. Shawn Steiman of Coffea Consulting will present a history of coffee in Hawaii and the emergence of Waialua Coffee and Cacao. Afterwards Shawn will demonstrate several different brewing methods using Waialua Coffees. Shawn Steiman, a.k.a. Dr. Coffee, will also be available to sign copies of his book, "The Hawai'i Coffee Book: A Gourmet's Guide from Kona to Kaua'i". Coffees brewed for the seminar will be available for sampling for the remainder of the event.
Free, behind the scenes Coffee & Cacao Mill Tours will be offered by "the founder of Waialua Coffee and Cacao"  Mike Conway from Dole. Space for this mill tour is limited so please call Bill Martin at 779-7439 to reserve. Be sure to taste the Natural Shave Ice made from Waialua Coffee and Waialua Chocolate and other real fruits at Island X Hawaii.

10:00 am    The music starts with a performance of Makua's (Coco Leong) Sunset Beach Elementary School Ukulele Class. This will kick off a special day of North Shore Hawaiian music, hula, and the open market exhibition of Waialua arts, crafts, food, and community groups informational booths.
A new addition to the Taste Of Waialua this year, is an all day concert stage funded by Friends For Waialua Town through a grant from the Hawaii Tourism Authority and the City & County of Honolulu. Featured will be North Shore and Waialua based artists: Bla Pahinui and Friends, The Abrigo Ohana, Kalei Gamiao, Ke Kani Nahe, Halau Hula Makana a ke  Aloha and Roshan & Shivani / Clear Sky.

Members of the Waialua Sugar Mill Surf industry will open their doors to visitors with Third Stone offering free tours of their surfboard factory and Sugar Mill Films hosting showings of their films Finding Aloha, North Shore Experience and Hawaii Shark Encounters.

North Shore Bath and Body offers daily tours of their soap factory and demonstrations of their soap making process.

ALOHA Chamber Members:
The Senate Ways and Means Committee has scheduled a hearing on a bill that INCREASES THE GENERAL USE TAX as an option to raise revenue to balance the State's budget. 
HB 793-Proposed SD1 is being heard on Wednesday, April 6 at 9:30 am in the auditorium at the State Capitol (Hearing Notice).

Please submit testimony by 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 6. We also encourage you to attend the hearing. 
HB 793, Proposed SD1, proposes to:
  • Temporarily increase the GET and public service company tax rates by 1% from October 1, 2011, to September 30, 2013.
  • Temporarily provides food and other tax credits. Effective July 1, 2011; repeals on June 30, 2015.
  • Temporarily suspends tax exemptions for certain persons and certain amounts of gross income or proceeds from the GET and requires the payment of tax.

WAIALUA ROBOTICS COMPETES WITH LEADERS IN LAS VEGAS
Six Hawaii Robotics Teams Continue Prep for Global Championships

HONOLULU -  Following their second regional win last weekend at the FIRST in Hawaii Regional Robotics Competition, Waialua High School robotics team competed again today at the Las Vegas Regional among 39 teams from across the country.  Waialua finished as a Regional Finalist and was recognized with two awards including:

*Entrepreneurship Award sponsored by Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, which celebrates the entrepreneurial spirit by recognizing a team that, since inception, has developed the framework for a comprehen- sive business plan to scope, manage, and achieve team objectives.

Woodie Flowers Award presented to Mr. Floyd "Dango" Matsumoto, mentor for the Waialua students, recognizing an outstanding engineer or teacher participating in the robotics competition who best demonstrates excellence in teaching science, math, and creative design.

Waialua also competed in the New York City Regional in early March, winning both the overall tournament as well as the Chairman's Award, the program's highest honor.

Waialua High, McKinley High and Kealakehe High School robotics teams won this year's FIRST in Hawai'i Regional Robotics Competition, qualifying them to move on to the 2011 FIRST Robotics Championship at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Missouri, April 27-30.  In all, six teams from Hawai'i schools have secured spots in the international championship, ensuring the Aloha State will be well represented in the prestigious competition dubbed the "Super Bowl of Smarts," including:

• Kealakehe High School
• McKinley High School
• Sacred Hearts Academy (previously qualified at Worcester Polytechnic Institute Regional Competition)
• Waiakea High School
• Waialua High School (previously qualified at New York City Regional Competition)
• Waianae High School

The FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition challenges teams of young people and their mentors to solve a common engineering problem in a six-week timeframe using a standard "kit of parts" and a common set of rules. The competition allows students to apply academic knowledge and innovation, while developing teamwork, problem-solving and critical thinking skills that will better prepare them to continue their education and enter the workforce.

FIRST in Hawaii Regional Robotics Competition, the fifth annual event, is scheduled for the same weekend next March.

FIRST Robotics is one of six programs which are supported by the Hawai'i Robotics Organizing Committee (ROC), including FIRST, FIRST LEGO League, Underwater ROV, Botball, VEX Robotics and Micro Robotics.

Recognizing the importance of promoting robotics education at an early age and sustaining students' interest in STEM education throughout their schooling, Hawai'i's six robotics programs joined together to form the Hawai'i Robotics Organizing Committee (ROC). The six of the robotics programs are coordinating efforts to promote robotics education in elementary, middle and high schools statewide.

IMPORTANT - Rally Against Burning of Boats Sunday 10AM at Harbor

We will be supporting a press conference/rally initiated by Rep. Gil Riviere to show our support for our member sponsor North Shore Shark Encounters and to also show that we will not tolerate the lawlessness shown in the burning of this business' THREE boats.

Please join us tomorrow, Sunday, at 10:00AM at the weighing station in the Boat Harbor .  Park in the boat harbor.

Owner Joe Pavsek will be offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of the arsonist.  If any of you would like to also contribute toward the reward, please call Joe at 221-1794.  He will be working with Crimestoppers.

Wind farm in Kahuku powers up

The state’s world-class tradewinds are now producing electricity for Oahu homes and businesses.



Officials from First Wind LLC, Hawaiian Electric Co. and state government will gather in Kahuku today to dedicate the island’s first large-scale wind farm. The 30-megawatt facility developed by Boston-based First Wind officially began selling electricity to HECO yesterday, allowing Oahu to join Maui and the Big Island in the effort to harness Hawaii’s famous winds.

Weed Circle Cleanup Postponed & Haleiwa Art Walk This Saturday

The Weed Circle Cleanup for this Saturday will be postponed to May due to it being a three day weekend. We will reschedule it soon for May and I hope that you will be able to come out and help with the cleanup then.

Andy Anderson presents Haleiwa Hotel proposal at October Chamber meeting

Developer Andy Anderson
D. G. "Andy" Anderson, who proposes purchasing 3.2 acres of property owned by the City and building a replica of the historic Haleiwa Hotel on those parcels  and the property where Jameson's is located, was the featured speaker at the North Shore Chamber of Commerce October membership meeting at Haleiwa Joe's.  His presentation included architectural drawings, an artist's rendering, and several historic photos of the original interior of the hotel.  His plan was well received by the more than 50 people in attendance.

Anderson has purchased land where Jameson's by the Sea restaurant is located, but did not purchase the business itself.  He envisions building a boutique-style hotel that is a replica of Haleiwa Hotel, one with gracious lawns and an open setting. He noted the hotel will follow the guidelines of the North Shore Sustainable Communities Plan and the Haleiwa Special District which limits heights to 42 feet and design consistent with 1920's Haleiwa.  He will be applying for the appropriate zoning and other permits once t he land is purchased from the City. He added that two acres would be donated back for a community owned park with the City required improvements.

The City is requiring him to construct walkways the length of the property, a pedestrian crossing, and 25 parking stalls for public use.  He will underground the utilities.  He projects a room cost to guests of $215  per night and estimates 110 employees  will be employed by the hotel.

Are you interested in spending a couple of hours each week staffing the Visitor Center at our new building  and helping with special projects and events?  If you're available for a shift lasting two hours weekly, please contact  us..  Training will be provided.  Interest in the history of the area is very helpful. 

Stop by  our office across from the Haleiwa Post Office or give us a call at 637-4558. You can also just fill out the Volunteer Application  and fax it to 637-4556 or mail it to us and we'll call you. 
A big mahalo goes out to our faithful volunteers who keep the office open from 1:00 to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday: Geri Takahashi Guillemot, Sherry Heiser, Barbara Hay Santos, Jenny Turner, and Alice Rogers.  All are long-time residents.  Our goal is to open at 11:00 am each day. 

Please help us reach our goal of having office hours that will meet the community's needs better and help the Chamber become more financially sustainable through increased Business Services income.

Remember to come to Haleiwa and visit the participating businesses for the Haleiwa Art Walk tonight from 5 to 9 PM.  Of special interest is the Grand Opening of the Clark Little Gallery in the Haleiwa Town Center.

Clark is the son of long-time residents Jim and Doric Little.  Jim is known for his work in developing beautiful varieties of plumeria about which he wrote a book that included his photography of those plumeria.  Clark seems to have inherited his dad's artistic gift with photogaphy.

It is heartening to see the younger generation of kids who were born and raised here starting their own family-owned businesses including Clark, Liz and Kai at Guava Shop, Noelle and Meg at Bonzer Front, and of course some who have taken over family businesses like Stan Matsumoto and Cathy Aoki, to name a few.  Small business is the life-blood of our special Haleiwa Town and keeping the entreneurial spirit alive is what keeps the town special and unique.

Membership Meeting

Aloha Members,

There will be a membership meeting next Wednesday the 23rd at Haleiwa Joe's 8AM.  The key note speakers will be Randy Rarick and Jodi Wilmott from the Vans Triple Crown. Randy has some amazing stats from the coverage of the Triple Crown that will probably surprise everyone.  Jodi will  have informa-tion about promoting the North Shore.

There will also be reports from our legislators, the police, and the North Shore Triathalon.

I will get an agenda out in the next couple of days.  I've also attached the list of Chamber meetings and  events again.  Please put the membership meetings and main events on your calendars now.
