Waimea Valley Re-Dedication and Pulama 'O Waimea this Saturday 9am-5pm

Here is an update regarding Chamber member Waimea Valley and information on the special event this Saturday:

Aloha Friends,

The Waimea Valley "Ohana would like to share our excitement, about our current progress and future plans, with our North Shore friends and neighbors. We recently completed a planning process that resulted in clearly defining a culturally appropriate and financially sustainable path forward for the Valley. The plan is based on a number of important premises to including the need for a stronger connection with the community, the cultural sites and the botanical gardens are the heart and soul of the Valley.

To accomplish our critical goal of financial sustainability over the next five years, we will focus on increasing the number of visitors to the Valley, by improving and expanding cultural and botanical programs and obtaining recognition as a world class cultural and botanical site. You will begin to see many positive changes in the Valley that have a much stronger emphasis on cultural programs and activities. We now have a full time cultural greeter at the Visitor Center to welcome, direct and assist our guests.

We're currently creating a cultural and botanical orientation for visitors entering the Valley. Additional cultural programs staff will be hired and we will develop a docent program for both botanical and cultural tours to help ensure we provide the best visitor experience possible. We are in the process of renovating our Visitor Center and will make a number of changes that will better display the historical, cultural and botanical items and aspects of the Valley.

Several other facilities will be renovated to provide venues for special events and activities. This will include reviving our annual hula kahiko competition and establishing a summer concert series. Kama'aina and Military "Mahalo Days? (half price admission) are the third Sunday of every month to tie in with Kanikapila Sunday. We plan to increase the number of cultural practitioners and artisans in the Valley to offer our visitors a more significant cultural learning opportunity. Our additional dining experience will feature The Proud Peacock restaurant, which will be renovated and reopened in the future. We are currently in the process of localizing our Na Mea "Ono menu and our gift shop items. As much as possible we want to promote North Shore gift and food items.

Waimea Valley is a treasure for all to enjoy and we hope you will reconnect with the Valley. We need your support and help to make it a success. Come and volunteer, or join our docent program. If you are a cultural practitioner or artisan, contact our Cultural Programs Department to arrange a time you can be in the Valley. Or, just come to experience the Valley's rich history, deep Hawaiian culture and beautiful botanical gardens.

Finally, the Waimea Valley "Ohana would like to invite our North Shore friends and neighbors to the Valley on August 11th, to join us for Pulama O Waimea, one of our annual cultural celebrations, featuring activities and displays. This event also takes place on the same day as our 6th Annual Kalo Workshop. There will be artisans and cultural practitioners sharing their knowledge and skills throughout the Valley. As a special feature for the keiki that day, there will be a presentation of "The Sleeping Giant of Waimea" puppet show at 3:30pm.

Waimea Valley welcomes Hale‘iwa Farmers' Market

Hawaii’s Favorite Farmers’ Market is happy to announce their Grand Re-Opening in Waimea Valley. Join in the festivities Thursday, August 9th, 3:00-7:00 pm in Waimea Valley. The Pikake Pavillion and main lawn are the new home of Hale‘iwa Farmers’ Market.

With 50 booths offering fresh fruits and vegetables, honey, nuts, grass-fed beef, pastured-raised eggs, fish, coffee, plants and orchids, fabulous food to eat or take home, and works by local artisans, everyone will delight in the all-local offerings. Enjoy live music by Lopaka Brown, Owana Salazar and Alika Kalauli III. Keiki can play with Rex and Surf Dog as they make free arts and crafts. Waimea Valley will host a bar, to pair with the delicious offering of our food vendors.

Opening Day Pule will be at 3:00pm in the Pikake Pavillion by Waimea Kupuna. Come join the festivities with the North Shore Community.

Membership Meeting with Elected Officials Changed to Thurs, July 14th 6:30pm

The meeting with our elected officials has been changed to Thursday, July 14th 6:30pm at Waimea Valley's Pikaka Pavilion. So make sure you change the meeting on your calendar from this coming week to July 14th.  This evening meeting is to accommodate those members who are unable to attend morning meetings. 

This is a great opportunity to hear from our newly elected officials about the status of the City and State's affairs, any legislation or issues impacting the North Shore and to ask any questions you may have.

The cost will be $5 for members and $10 for non-members.  Please RSVP by July 8th!

Questions for Elected Officials at Membership Meeting on July 8th Pikake Pavilion

Please send us questions (by return email) that you would like asked of our elected officials by noon July 6th for the membership meeting next Thursday. We will compile all questions submitted and ask the most frequently submitted ones.

Senator Bunda, Rep. Magaoay and Councilman Dela Cruz will be present at this next membership meeting Thursday, July 8th 7pm at Waimea Valley Pikake Pavilion. Light refreshments will be served. $5 for members and $10 for nonmembers.

Also, please plan on attending and testifying at the Public Hearing regarding school consolidation (possible closing of one of the elementary schools) next Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at Haleiwa Elementary School Cafeteria. More information will be forthcoming. The Chamber Board of Directors voted to support the Waialua Complex's recommendation to keep all schools (Waialua High, Waialua Elem., and Haleiwa Elem.) open.

Waimea Valley presents "Arbor Day"

Waimea Valley, located at 59-864 Kamehameha Highway (across from Waimea Bay) is proud to present its 2nd Annual “ARBOR DAY” Saturday, November 7, 2009 from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm.

The plant sale and tree give-away will take place in front of Parking Lot 2 (before security guard shack). Participants are encouraged to bring an extra bucket or two to take free mulch home for their yards.

HECO will once again participate by providing the trees for plant give away. Each household will be allowed one free tree and will be asked to complete a short survey before leaving. The survey will help HECO to determine what kind of plants to prepare for the next year.

Waimea Valley will have native and non-native plants for sale and several vendors from across O`ahu will also be selling a wide variety of plants:

• Olomana Tropicals –heliconias, gingers and bromeliads
• Jill Coryell, the Hibiscus Lady – original cultivated varieties of hibiscus
• Alvin Tsuruda of Waihale Products – a very wide variety of exotics, good named Anthuriums
• Ed Miyashita of Growing Creations – herbs, orchids and vegetable starters
• Kay Lynch of La`au Hawai`i– native Ferns

Admission to the Arbor Day Event is free; however, there will be a
parking fee of $5.00 per car.

Our guest speaker will be Sherry Menor-McNamara, Vice President for Business Advocacy & Government Affairs at the main Chamber. She will be reviewing the legislative process and current bills in the legislature that will affect business. This is really important. As you know the Card Check bill is back again this year and could really hurt small business. Come and get informed!

A continental breakfast will be served by Waimea Valley Grill: $5 for members and $10 for nonmembers.

Christmas Party Venue Changed to Turtle Bay Resort

Aloha Members and Friends,

Christmas Party:
The deadline to get your payments and guest lists in has been extended to this coming Saturday the 29th at the end of the day. Our final head count is due first thing Monday. There are still tables and individual places available to honor Gary Anderson, Joan Gossett and the Haleiwa Arts Festival as well as others who have made a difference in our community.

As most of you know, there was a rock slide in Waimea Valley Park that shut the park down. So, Turtle Bay has graciously agreed to have the party there and they have been extremely accommodating to us in the process! We’re very excited about having it there. The one change is that there will be $3.00 charged for validated parking. Please spread the word to all your guests if you bought a corporate table. We apologize for any inconvenience, but we had no control over this.

Auction Donations:
We have all kinds of great items that will make wonderful Christmas presents donated already. Special items include: Turtle Bay packages, a Giclee by Gonzalez from Tabora Gallery Outrigger, a signed 2006 Kokua Festival framed (Koa) poster by Ilona Hemperly, Koa framed Wyland posters, a custom Mike Casey Strong Current surfboard (raffle), and a place next to Santa in the Haleiwa Town Parade. However, we still need more items and would love to have a donation from you.

Governor signs bill to acquire Turtle Bay

With North Shore business and environmental leaders looking on in approval, Gov. Linda Lingle last night signed a bill into law authorizing the state to acquire the Turtle Bay Resort and keep some of the undeveloped land in preservation.

The bill signing at a North Shore Chamber of Commerce banquet in Waimea Valley was a ceremonial yet important moment for an idea that began as a surprise in the governor's State of the State speech in January.
